Origins of the Middle East Conflicts

After Viewing the PowerPoint located on my website entitled "Power Point for Mr. Stribling's Blog", write an 8 sentence response in regards to your impressions on the Arab/Israeli Conflict. What did you know before the PPT? How did your impression change? Briefly comment on the actions of the British, Palestinians, and Israelis.

  1. During World War I, the British promised the Arabs the right to govern themselves, in exchange for their help in defeating the Ottomans. To the Arab's dismay, the British and the French divided the Middle East into protectorates, due to their ironic belief that the Arab's could not govern themselves. To add to the Arab's embarrasment, the British actually encouraged Jewish settlers to come to Palestine. The Arab's felt cheated, and I'm sure that's one of the major reasons why they rejected the U.N partition of Palestine. The whole Israeli-Arab conflict is ridiculous. Yes, the Israelis did come in huge numbers and they did demand land that the Palestinians had lived on for centuries. But, the Israelis had been driven out in the first place by the Romans. They just came back to claim a homeland. Also, the whole conflict would have been avoided if the Arab's had accepted the U.N partition plan, because the Israelis (grateful that they finally had a place to call their own) accepted it! The Israelis were never the agressors in the first place, the Arab's were the first to invade. I actually have read about all this throughly before, but the PPT refreshed my memory to answer this question.

  2. Before i read the power point i had never even heard of the Arab/Israeli conflict. Well my impressions did not change because i did not know anything about the subject. Well when world war II was over the Jews wanted to move to a religious area, so they wanted to move to Isreal. Though had the same time the Palestians were living there. I believe that the Jews could have shared the land, but they were being selfish.I believe it was good that the British withdrew from the conflict because i dont think they were ready to go back into battle. When the fighting ended in 1945, and the Jews had a lot of egypitan territoy and some territory in Jordan, i do not think they should have taken it because i do not belive Egypt ever did anything to them. I think in the end the British were fine, they never did anything bad, neither did the Palestinians, they were just defending them selves. I think it was the Israelis that were causing a big problem.

  3. Before I read the powerpoint, I knew practically nothing about the Arab/Israeli Conflict. After WWII, the area had become the Palestine mandate of Britain. I had no idea that the conflict started with two groups, the Jews and the Palestinian Arabs, fighting over the same land mass, Israel. Both groups fought over Israel, and Britain decided to leave it in 1947. Then when the Jews declared independence, this forced the Palestinian Arabs to flee to Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Giza Strip. After, the Israelis fought and took over large quantities of land, but this land was not made into a separate Palestinian state, but given to Jordan and Egypt. The Camp David Accords were signed in 1979; this was a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel that made Israel give the Sinai, an original part of Egypt. My impressions are that the Jew should have tried to work something out with the Arabs, rather than causing a long lasting war. This was a selfish act and the consequences were probably greater than expected.

  5. Before this, I did not know much about how the middle east functioned, or what the history was. I had always assumed they were 100% Arab all of the time (or at least most of it all of the time). I was "in the dark" on the history. I did not know that Israel came from the survivors of the Holocaust, nor did I know this about Lebanon. Also, the fact that Israel was attacked time and time again and survived is amazing. Even the onslaught from the six day war could not stop them. When OPEC boycotted oil from Israel-friendly countries, I thought it was really mean. Egypt's multiple attacks were events that seemed overly done. The forming of the PLO was in interesting choice for the Palestines. Finally, the conflict continuing was partly expected and partly shocking. - Will

  6. Before reading and viewing the powerpoint, I knew almost nothing about the Arabs and Israelis. After the Holocaust, many jews had nowhere to go. They decided to settle in Israel. The United States and the Soviet Union both backed up the Jews when they formed their own independent state of Israel in 1948. Later in 1973, the Kippur war occured between Israel and the Arabs. The soviets backed the Arabs and the U.S. supported Israel. I think it was unwise for the U.S. to get involved because it created more tensions with the Soviets during the Cold War. However, it was a great way to test America's weapons with the Soviets and let the Israelis and Arabs know who had the better weapons.

  7. I had known that there was and is conflict in the Middle East. I knew that the conflict was between the Jewish people and the Arabs. However, I did not know that there were actually “official” wars. I thought that it was just total chaos and fighting. The PowerPoint made me realize that the conflict is really not the Palestinian Arabs fault, but is actually the fault of the incoming people who wanted their own country. The PowerPoint made me realize that the Palestinians were actually just defending the land they rightfully owned from being taken away by the entering people. I was unaware that the U.S. and the Soviet Union backed countries in the Middle East: The Soviets backed the Arabs and the U.S. backed Israel. Before watching the PowerPoint, I was unaware of the back-story of how the conflict began and the different details of it.

I believe that there should be no wars over religion because every should choose their religion of chose. The Israelis are part of a very small country and everyone thinks how is this possible. Well, Britain is small and they had the most powerful navy in the world and they are a small country also. PLus Israel has the best soldier to soldier army in the world. American is much bigger than Israel and they have the third best. Before the power point i knew that America was fighting the war on terror. There is a ton of oil in the middle east. The Americans were able to kill Osama Bin Laden the person behind 911, My impression did not change.

  9. I think this was a dumb conflict just because the Jews felt like the world pay them back for what Hitler did. I also think the Arab's did not like for en people to invade there homeland. The Brits just watched it happen. over all i think this was just plan selfishness on every ones part.

  10. After viewing the power point I feel that the Arab/Israeli conflict could have been avoided. The Jews came into Israel after WWII looking for places to live, but they disregarded that fact that Palestinian Arabs already inhabited the area. If they decided to share the area when the British left, and if the U.N. did not tell them to split the area in half, then there would not have been a conflict. They would share the area, and the Israelis and Palestinian Arabs would not have fought. Causing the Israelis not to have gained control of a larger amount. Because they split the area unequally, Palestinian Arab refugees fled to Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Before this power point i did not know anything about the Arab/Israeli Conflict, i found it to be very informative.

  11. Before reading the powerpoint, I cannot list any facts concerning the topic of the Arab/Isreal conflict, because I am currently unaware of what that problem is. Subsequently, having read the information, I have been briefed by the powerpoint. Basically, after WWII the surplus of surviving Jews had nowhere to return to, and therefore Britain sent them to Isreal. The Palestine Arabs and the “Zionists” both wanted their own land, and tension levels were reaching high amplitudes. In 1947, the UN split the country in half, but this did not stop a war from occurring when the Jews, certain of U.S. and Soviet support, claimed independence and the new state of Israel on May 14, 1948. Although countries such as Egypt, Syria, and Jordan (all bordering states of Israel) took part in boycotts and wars against Israel; the Soviet Union supported the Arabs and the US helped the Israel allies (particularly in the Yom Kippur War). Israel and Egypt sign a peace treaty in 1979 with U.S. President Jimmy Carter, but conflict still rages in Palestine.

  12. Well i had known a few things about the Arab and Israeli conflict. I new that most of the Jews that had survived the Holocaust had no place to go, and the majority of them wanted to go to Israel. Im not sure why both Zionists and Palestinian Arabs wanted to capture Palestine. Also it always seems like the United States is in everyone else conflicts. LIke i feel like saying to the U.S.A......."Come on man"........"Deon Sanders"

  13. Honestly before I read Mr. Striblings powerpoint I didn't know much on the Middle East. Niether did I know about all the conflict going on there. It's sad that after the Holocaust the Jewish people had no place to go and had no place to call their homeland. Since the Jewish people had to move into Palestine(now Israel) the Palestinian people had to share their country. I do agree how it would be unfair for the Palestinian people to share the land that they have lived on for many years with another group of people. But at the same time, the Jewish people really had no other place to go. That's when the fighting and disagreement started. They faught and disagreed for many years. Eventually this land became Israel and is now Jewish territory.

  14. The Arab and Israel conflict based around where the Jews should got after the Holocaust. Most Jews/ Zionists felt as though they should go to their homeland, Israel. Palestinian Arabs and Zionists wanted independent nations in Palestine. After England withdrew the U.N. split palestine in half between the Zionists and Palestinian Arabs. The Jews had a war with Soviet and U.S. approval that Israel could be the homeland for the Jews. Palestinian Arabs fled to Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza. Camp David Accords declares a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. I did not know much about the conflicts between the Arabs and Jews before the powerpoint except the Jews needed somewhere to go after the Holocaust and that would create conflict for sure.

  15. I did not know anything about the conflict before. I felt it was interesting though since it occurred right after World War II. I thought it was interesting because a thought never came to my mind that some Jewish people were taken out of the Middle East. I knew that is where a lot of Jewish people were from but when I think of the holocaust I think of Europe. I think the zionist deserved the land though since it belonged to them in the first place. What the British did was great though there compromise is always a good thing.

  16. Before the Powerpoint I knew that Palestine and other countries in the Middle East had had their issues. I did not know the details or the treaties or what countries were in the conflict. It seems like the Soviet Union and the United States are involved with many wars and they are mostly going against each other. For example, during the Yom Kippur War the Soviets supplied the Arabs with supplies and the United states supplied the Isrealis with supplies. I thought it was surprising that after WWII the Arab-Israeli conflict became more serious. It all started after WWI when the area became the British mandate of Palestine. Jewish immigration accelerated, and so did the friction between the Jews and Palestinian Arabs. Having the Holocaust, and seeing how the Jews were treated, the Palestinian Arabs became angry. This conflict became the major political and military problem in the Middle East.

  17. I honestly did not know anything about the Arab/Israel Conflict before I read Mr. Stribling's powerpoint. This conflict definitely could have been avoided. Yes, the Jews did need somewhere to go after World War II, but they did not have to go to Israel. This area was already they British mandate of Palestine, but when the Jews started their immigration there was conflict. They both wanted their own nations, but they both also wanted Palestine. In 1947 Britain gave up, so the U.N. split the country in half. The Jews thought that they had U.S. and Soviet support, so they declared independence and the creation of the new state, Israel, on May 14, 1948. This caused a war to start. When the fighting was over the Israelis had conquered much more land than the U.N. had imagined, so the rest of the territory fell to Egypt, and Jordan. Palestinian Arab refugees then fled to Lebanon. Israel eventually had most of the land around it. In 1979 Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty called the Camp David Accords. In the Camp David Accords, Irael had to return Sanai to Egypt in order to receive recognition. Israel also had to find a solution to the Palestine refugee dilemma. In 1988 the PLO (Palestine liberation organizations) declared independence of Palestine. If the U.N. had not split the country in half this whole conflict would have been avoided.

  18. I was aware of most of conflicts occurring between the Palestinians and Israelis. The conflict started with the Treaty of Versailles. After WWII, more Jewish immigrants came to the area and conflict arose between the Israelis and Palestinians. The British Mandates gave land to the Israelis which was once the Palestinian's land without permission. I wasn't aware that there was an official war which was information I gained from the PP. It is understandable that conflict would arise after quarrels over land, but official war came as a surprise to me. Conflict continues to this day.

  19. The Jews have had a claim to the land since 3000 B.C. Islam and the Palestinians only settled the land in 650 A.D. Also, the majority of the Jews that lived in Palestine in 1947 were legally allowed to settle there. They came during the British Mandate and late during the Ottoman Empire. The Jews basically asked for a small homeland, because where else would they go? The Holocaust had just ended. The Palestinians, in response to the partition plan, did not want to share or compromise. So, instead of trying to talk it out, they instead got the support of 5 Arab nations, and invaded the Jewish state from all sides. Yet, they still lost.

  20. Before seeing the powerpoint i new just about nothing about the conflict. I now think that the conflics are insane aginst the jews. Now to my knowledge i know that the jews have been down right hated all across history. This is crazy to want to push a group of people out of their homeland with nearly no place to be. The Jewish people deserve to have a country just like the rest of the world. The Zionest should definitly get at least a peice of land, even thought they deserve the whole country. I side with the british on this one.

  21. Before the power point I knew there was rest in the middle east, but I did not know where or or what it was for. Now I know that it was between the Jews and the Arabs. Because of the British Mandate, the Arabs were forced to move out of there country to make room for the Jews to have a homeland. The Arabs, not surprisingly, did not want to be shoved out of their country and put up a fight. This is the cause of the conflict. The British wanted to move the Jews there because of Zionism, the belief that the Jews should have there own homeland. After WWII many people believed that the Jews should have there own homeland so what is a batter place than where they used to lived thought the British. The only problem was that someone was already living there so the conflict arose.
